Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy is used for the
treatment of certain veins
that are not readily seen on the surface. Using ultrasound guidance
in real
time, the same sclerosant medication used for superficial spider
veins is
injected into the vein. The medication/liquid (sclerosant) injected
causes
inflammation of the vein wall and causes it to be damaged ultimately
causing
collapse. By using a compression stocking following sclerotherapy,
the vein
can no longer carry blood and closes with the body ultimately absorbing
the
remnant cord. Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy requires special
training in
the use of real time ultrasound guidance usage which conventional
sclerotherapy does not.
